2020 HALF YEAR IN REVIEW: OUR BIGGEST HAPPENINGS

It’s been an overwhelming year and we are just halfway through. So much has happened and it feels like the year has been on for half of a century. Yet, in spite of all these, we are doing our best to stay strong after all, #WeAreInThisTogether.

While it’s easy to focus on all of the bad that has happened, we cannot write off 2020. There has been some good moments and progress that has been made.

UBA has had some defining moments; some major events have rocked our world. While we wonder what is in store in the remaining part of the year and stay hopeful, here are some happenings that have rocked UBA’s world in the last six months of 2020.

The bank began the year with announcing the new appointments of members of the group board and operations across Africa.

While we were in celebratory mood, the Chairman, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc and Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Tony Elumelu CON was named among Ebony Magazine’s ‘Ebony Power 100. Tony Elumelu was recognized as a trail blazer in the trail-blazing category for his efforts aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship, instituting luck and reducing poverty on the African continent.

The bank’s contribution to ensure continuous development in Africa inspired us to enter a partnership with U.S Agency for International Development, through the Prosper Africa initiative to increase two-way trade and investment between the United States and the nations of Africa in February.
This partnership ensures that businesses are equipped with the technical and financial tools they need to enter into new trading and investment relationships in Africa and the United States.

Following the outbreak of the pandemic in Nigeria and Africa at large, United Bank for Africa through the UBA foundation in March made an over 5 billion Naira (USD14 million) donation to provide significant and the much needed support to Nigeria and 19 other African countries where we are present.
The pandemic for us is an opportunity for everyone-private and public sector to work together and quickly. In addition to its donation, we provided a free telemedicine platform, which is physician-led, to provide direct access to medical advice to citizens, in compliance with social distancing requirements.

Against all odds, we broke our own record by hosting the first ever Virtual Annual General meeting in April.
The bank also fulfilled its promise made to its shareholders as dividends were increased by 20 per cent to a total of N1.00 per share.

Not allowing a pandemic deter plans, in celebration of Africa day, the bank hosted the first ever virtual and second edition of #UBAAfricaConversations. A defining time in our history, the #UBAAfricaConversations brought together global leaders and distinguished men and women to discuss a common agenda; Africa beyond the pandemic.

There is no better time to have these conversations than at a time like this which presents an opportunity for our continent to reset.

Some of the panelists include; The President of Senegal, H.E. Macky Sall; President of Liberia, H.E George Weah, the United States Senator Chris Coons. The President & Chairman of the Board of Directors of the African Export-Import Bank (AFREXIMBANK), Professor Benedict Okey Oramah; President, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer and, President and Founder, Africa CEO Forum, Amir Ben Yahmed to mention a few.

Just as the bank concluded the #UBAAfricaConversations, the bank commemorated the International day of the African Child in June. The bank reaffirmed its commitment to Africa, through the UBA Foundation when it hosted a virtual mentoring and reading sessions. Also in the month of June, UBA Mozambique opened a new business office in the city of Maputo.

July has just begun and while we wait for what is in store for us, the bank has already made some moves. Recently, the Group Board of Directors announced the appointment of Oliver Alawuba and Ayo Liadi as the new Deputy Managing Directors for UBA Group in charge of our Africa and Nigeria businesses respectively.

This reinforces the leadership role UBA continues to play across the continent.
The excitement still continues in July as the men of REDTV’s Hit Web Series; The Men’s Club returns to our screens. The third season will debut on the 22nd of July.

The year 2020 has been an interesting one for us at UBA and though the last 6 months has been a whirlwind, this is no time to be exhausted.
As we embrace our new normal, we are confident that there’s still a lot of history left to be made in 2020.
