The UBA National essay competition, targeted at senior secondary school students in Nigeria is organised annually, as part of UBA Foundation’s education initiative which is aimed at promoting the reading culture and encouraging healthy and intellectual competition amongst secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.

Jolaosho Oluwatoroti Otokini of Louisville Girls High School, Ogun State, emerged winner out of the 12finalists of the 2019 edition National Essay Competition. While Precious Ifeoma Okey of Oladipo Alayande School of Science, Oyo State and Aimeé Okoko of Beautiful Beginning Academy, FCT Abuja came 2nd and 3rd respectively winning 1.5 Million Naira and 1 Million naira each.

The other finalists each got a laptop. They include; Onowu Phebe Chimamanda Onyinyechi (F), Deborah Oreoluwa Tayo; Zenith Academy, Ibadan, Bernard Anita Onyinyechi; Oritamefa Baptist Model School, Ibadan, Ndoma, Goodluck Nsed; Mary Slessor Academy, Calabar, Cross River State, Abang, Jesse Oneonyi; Enoghi Secondary School, Ikom, Cross River State, Gideon Ekong; Nobles International School, Uyo, Kinika Cletus; Jephbah Comprehensive Secondary School, Rumomer Ozoba, Port Harcourt, Akandu Nnaemeka. Z.A.; Ifako International Secondary School, Aliyu Imuhani Seidat; Achievers International College Okene.
The foundation received over 5000 entries submitted from students across the nation.

The GMD, Kennedy Uzoka, expressed happiness with turnout of entries recalling that ‘Over time, we noticed that the level of education has moved backwards. UBA as part of the things that we do to give back to the communities that we operate in, is to identify key intervention areas which we specifically single out and put our hearts behind this. UBA Foundation is our CSR arm that we use to do this. We focus on education as one of our pillars in not just Nigeria but in all of the countries that we operate in.’

The final 12 entries were judged by renowned university professors; Professor Emmanuel Omobowale; University of Ibadan, Professor Asabe Kabir Usman- Usman Dan Fodio University, sokoto, Professor Samuel Onuigbo; University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Ini Uko; University of Uyo . They stated that they were impressed with many of the participants show of creativity and originality in approaching the essay topic.
The students were judged on content, expression, organization, and mechanical accuracy.

For the being the school with the highest entries; livingstone College was rewarded with educational gifts worth 1Million naira.

UBA Foundation’s National Essay Competition has been taken to other African countries including Ghana and Kenya as well as Mozambique, Senegal and other African countries.
